Rob Cockerham, blogger and citizen scientist, has a simple proposal: When a mass-murder occurs, stop giving criminals what they want.  Instead of providing killers with fame (and on occasion fortune [book deals]) via the media echo-chamber, refer to these sick individuals publicly by hurricane-naming-style nicknames.

Pequannock News is pleased to announce that we will be one of the first media outlets to adopt this naming scheme.  As a society, we must learn from these tragic events in order to better address future threats, but never should a murderer benefit, whether materially or by social stature, from the commission of these heinous crimes.

Pequannock News will refer henceforth to the Aurora killer by his Cockerham nickname: "Foot."  The Newtown shooter will be known as "Fumble."  The murderer of 5 individuals in Mexico shall be called "Ladle."

Cockerham had this to say about his naming system: "With the Nicknames for the Infamous scheme, real killers, living or dead, would be saddled with a pre-determined insult. Their real name could be forgotten, replaced by "Bowl" or "Pouty". For official business, police reports, in the courts, on wikipedia and in history books, the killer's real name would be used. I don't think we should re-write history, I just want to chill the effect of worldwide fame possible through newsworthy crimes. It's a simple, free change. Any news organization may adopt these nicknames without further consultation." ~Rob Cockerham

This naming scheme is not ridiculous.  It's a way to defend our society from an epidemic of fame-seeking psychopaths that the mass media has made worse through their round-the-clock coverage (in a recent case placing news anchors in director's chairs at the site of the shooting within less than 48 hours).  What's ridiculous is that we have to take actions like this.  What's ridiculous is that we can't keep our children safe in our own communities.

Pequannock News has also started a Whitehouse Petition to ask the federal government to officially adopt a mass-murderer naming scheme, please take a moment to sign and help stop the cycle of violence and infamy which has become so prevalent:
